Question 1

What makes a ski boat different from a regular runabout?

Accepted Answer

A ski or wake boat uses an inboard engine mounted low and central in the hull instead of an outboard, which keeps the wake clean and the boat balanced for towing skiers, wakeboarders, and wakesurfers — most also add ballast tanks and a wake-shaping system that a regular runabout doesn't have.

Question 2

Direct-drive or V-drive inboard — which is better for skiing and wakeboarding?

Accepted Answer

Direct-drive inboards put the engine at the center of the boat, producing the flattest, most symmetrical wake — the traditional choice for competitive slalom skiing. V-drive inboards put the engine toward the back, freeing up cockpit space and producing the bigger, more surf-friendly wake that's become the standard for wakeboarding and wakesurfing.

Question 3

How much does a ski boat cost?

Accepted Answer

Ski and wake boat prices typically start in the mid five figures for an entry-level model and can run well over $200,000 for a fully loaded wake boat with a large ballast system and premium electronics.

Question 4
